JagdPanther 125/Tamiya+ scratch / 1/SPA 654

Post autor: TankIndustry » 11 grudnia 2016, 00:52

Friends:

I started a Tamiya JagdPanther, 1/25 a few months back.
It will be based on JagdPanther 123 of 1/ Schwere Panzerjager-Abteilung 654

I was fortunate to see a real JagdPanther up close a few years ago, that is me in the first picture below.
It was at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, near Baltimore Maryland.
That outdoor museum is now closed and all the vehicles and guns were shipped elsewhere ... I'll find them again some day!

JagdPanthers have incredible lines. No matter what angle you view them from their beauty and deadly power is is most apparent.

The Tamiya kit is impressive but has many problems to correct.

I'll begin this build with the gun assembly.

The kit problems are:

Rear section of the Muzzle Brake is not long enough.
Muzzle Brake, lock bolt detail is missing.
Muzzle Brake is hollow looking.
Muzzle brake, barrel locking collar is missing.
Primary gun tube is far too long.
locking collar at the base of the primary gun tube is missing locking tool grab holes.
Gun Mantle is not shaped correctly and is missing the top attachment point detail.
Rectangular, bolt on, Gun Mantle housing is too long, is not wide enough and is poorly detailed.

The pictures below indicate the work done.

The Gun Mantle and rectangular, bolt on, Gun Mantle Housing are scratch builds entirely.
I thought I could rework the kit Gun Mantle but determined it was easier to simply build up a new one. This decision was influence by my intention to use an aftermarket, aluminum gun. That piece is beautifully made but seems to have been based on the gun in the kit. Regardless, it is far too long.
Reworking the kit part is a much easier alternative.

Upper and Lower Front Plate details

Much additional detail work was done to compensate for:

Hollow looking ball machine-gun housing
Poorly detailed front mud guards
Poorly detailed head light
Headlight mounting frame not provided
Side armor, towing loop mounting points are missing the reinforcing rings.
Finger style, final drive, semi-circular, armored guard joins to the front lower hull side armor are missing
Final drive, cast gear housing attachment bolt heads on the lower hull side armor, inside surface are missing

Additional work done:

Include heavy weld beads on upper and lower plates as well as along the top of the armored, final drive housing guards.
Embellish upper and lower front plate armor joins, which are a classic feature of all JagdPanthers.

The brass machine gun barrel is an aftermarket part purchased from Panzer Hobby Art

Hi Piotr

The road wheels will be modified exactly as they were for my Panther 534.
Using my Unimat 200, I will carefully trim them to the correct shape and putty fill the the the molded groove on the inner road wheels, see below

The rubber bandages for both Panther and Jagdpanther had 100 mm of width, This is only 4 mm in our scale.Check it necessarily ! They look as if they were too wide.

JadgPanther 123, Idler Wheels

The idler wheels that came with the kit are not usable.
As a result I made my own set, using the kit part hubs as the base for each.

Additional work was done to accurately represent the adjustable idler wheel arms and the hull openings where they are located ....sorry Tamiya, your steel rod axle and hull side slot opening are still horrible!

Many JagdPanthers had Panther A style idlers but I want this model to feature the later version, which had a slightly larger diameter and dual flange spokes. They were designed to channel mud build up down the wheel hub away from the outer edges. This made them less prone to throwing a track, during field operation.

The pictures below indicate the work done and include contrasts between the kit parts and the custom builds.

JagdPanther 123 Rear Hull

Due to the corrections made to the hull/superstructure part, it was necessary to rework the rear plate part as well, in order to obtain the proper shape and fit. This amounted to extending the the height by about 1/4 inch as well as trimming a bit off the angled and horizontal edges. Additionally, the part was reversed so as to have a smooth flat surface on the outside, as opposed to the surface containing all the molded on details, which I intended to replace anyway. The details in question are poor in my opinion and are not located correctly.

Other rear hull detail problems include:

Storage bins are Panther A/D size and are very poorly detailed.
No tow coupling is provided
Jack and mounting frame are poorly detailed.
No rear reflector is provided.

The exhaust pipes that came with the kit were the type that would appear on a late production Panther A (cast pipe housings with left exhaust breather pipes ). Some JadgPanthers did have these but I wanted to feature the classic rectangular, welded pipe housings, so additional scratch builds were necessary.

JagdPanther 123 Top Plate

The kit top plate and details are not terrible but do fall short of being a good representation of the real thing. The plate itself is not quite long enough from front to back and many of the details seem off, visually. I did retain a few of the original parts in my build:

Hatch lids
Base of Primary Ventilator
Secondary Ventilator cover.

All remaining details are scratch, see the images below.

JagdPanther 123 Superstructure Rear Plate

One of the problems the Tamiya kit suffers from is the fact that the superstructure is too high. I did a variety of adjustments to the entire hull part in order to better represent the JagdPanther, in 25th scale.
One of my efforts involved is a custom made superstructure rear plate. This allowed me to obtain a part that more accurately reflects the actual height of the superstructure, above the engine deck. A reworking of the rear hatch part was necessary, as well, in order to obtain proper height relative to the new plate. I retained the kit, shell casing ejection port cover plate, even though it is a bit bigger than it should be (I may rework that too ... for now, I can live with it).

In the few photos I've seen of JagdPanther 123, an upper storage bin is obviously present, so a scratch was done to include that detail as well.

The antenna base is resin and came from a part set purchased from Panzer Hobby Art, 25th scale.

The pictures below indicate the work done.

Next: Custom Engine Deck build.

JagdPanther 123 Engin Deck

Engine deck complete, finally!
Entirely scratch built, except for the lifting hooks and the bumpers on the engin access hatch.
A little off in places, in terms of fit, but I believe will look very nice once painted and detailed.
The two cooling fan housings turned out very well, I would say.
I will add the tow cable mounts later in the build.
